Size
The Coton de Tulear is a small dog that stands less than 13 inches tall at it withers and an extremely rare tall Coton stands over 14 inches. An adult dog weights 18 pounds or less. The head of a standing adult Coton will barely reach an adult's knee. When watching TV, a snoozing Coton will fill a person's lap, and a curled-u[ Coton can comfortably "take-over" an average size bed pillow. A Coton can easily inhabit a medium-size dog crate with room to spare. Despite it's small size, the Coton is not a toy dog nor is it nervous or especially delicate. Many owners come to think of their Coton as "a large dog is a small, easily portable package."
Coat
The Coton has long, unique hair that is very dry and cotton-like in appearance and sheds very little. The hair of the Coton is free of oils and the skin free of dander, so most people sensitive or allergic to the hair of other breeds find this breed preferable.
Life Expectancy
The Coton de Tulear lives considerable longer than it's closest relatives. The expected life span ranges from 14 years to 17 years while enjoying relatively good health until the end of its life span.
Personality
The Coton has a calm, laid back disposition. They are intelligent, with a happy demeanor, can easily be trained and quickly become a family member.
Cotons are not a fragile dog, and can go hiking, camping or travel. They are also perfectly happy to sit for hours and watch TV.
